RPZ testing
Annual backflow device testing
Every testable backflow prevention device connected to the Sydney Water network (reduced pressure zone assemblies, double check valves and registered break tanks) must pass a field test each year by an accredited tester. The test measures check valve integrity and relief valve operation against defined pass thresholds using a calibrated differential gauge.
Scope
What this covers
Locating and identifying each device against the property's meter and register records
Field testing with a calibrated test kit, recording readings at each stage
Tagging tested devices with the result and next due date
Electronic lodgement of the test report with Sydney Water
A copy of results for your own maintenance or strata records
Timing
When it's needed
Twelve months after the last recorded test: Sydney Water's reminder letters go to the property owner, and lapsed devices attract follow-up action against the account holder. New sites, changed tenancies and newly installed devices also trigger testing outside the anniversary cycle.
Water discharging from an RPZ relief port means the device is protecting the supply: do not plug, cap or bypass it; arrange service instead. Never remove or dismantle a backflow assembly yourself, and treat any suspected contamination of drinking water as urgent: stop using the supply and contact Sydney Water.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Number of devices on the property and how well their locations are documented
Isolation practicality: some tests briefly interrupt supply to the protected zone
Access arrangements: plant rooms, pits, locked risers, roof plant
Whether previous test records exist or the register needs reconciling first
In NSW, backflow prevention devices may only be tested by plumbers who hold backflow accreditation endorsed on their NSW Fair Trading plumbing licence, and results must be reported to Sydney Water. Ask any tester for their licence and accreditation details and check the endorsement covers backflow work before the visit.
