AS/NZS 3500.1
New device installation
New connections, changed hazard ratings and failed audits all end the same way: a device that must be installed to AS/NZS 3500.1, commissioned with an initial field test, and registered with Sydney Water so the annual cycle begins. Position matters as much as product: drainage for relief discharge, clearances for future testing, and protection from freezing and tampering.
Scope
What this covers
Selection of device class and size matched to the rated hazard and flow demand
Installation with test cocks accessible and relief ports drained to a visible point
Commissioning test with results lodged to open the device's register record
Isolation valves fitted so future annual tests do not shut whole buildings down
Timing
When it's needed
Triggered by new water connections, trade waste requirements, fire service upgrades, irrigation systems drawing from mains, or a survey that found a hazard running unprotected. Retrofitting into live sites is routine but benefits from planning the shutdown window.
Water discharging from an RPZ relief port means the device is protecting the supply: do not plug, cap or bypass it; arrange service instead. Never remove or dismantle a backflow assembly yourself, and treat any suspected contamination of drinking water as urgent: stop using the supply and contact Sydney Water.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
Pipe size, flow requirements and available pressure across the assembly
Location constraints: pits versus plant rooms versus external walls
Drainage capacity where an RPZ relief port may discharge
Shutdown tolerance of the site during changeover
In NSW, backflow prevention devices may only be tested by plumbers who hold backflow accreditation endorsed on their NSW Fair Trading plumbing licence, and results must be reported to Sydney Water. Ask any tester for their licence and accreditation details and check the endorsement covers backflow work before the visit.
