Cross-connection audit

Hazard rating and site surveys

Backflow protection is only right when it matches the hazard behind it. A site survey walks every water connection (irrigation, plant rooms, wash bays, chemical dosing, fire services) rates each hazard as high, medium or low under the AS/NZS 3500.1 framework, and reconciles what protection exists against what the rating requires.

Scope

What this covers

  • Room-by-room and connection-by-connection hazard identification

  • Rating of each cross-connection risk with the required containment or zone protection

  • Register reconciliation: devices on site versus devices Sydney Water knows about

  • A written schedule of gaps, wrong-class devices and orphaned installations

  • Priced recommendations sequenced by risk rather than convenience

Timing

When it's needed

On purchase or lease of a commercial site, after fit-outs change water use, when a council or Sydney Water letter questions your protection, or when nobody can actually say how many devices the site has. Facilities managers inheriting old buildings order these first for good reason.

Water discharging from an RPZ relief port means the device is protecting the supply: do not plug, cap or bypass it; arrange service instead. Never remove or dismantle a backflow assembly yourself, and treat any suspected contamination of drinking water as urgent: stop using the supply and contact Sydney Water.

Quote variables

What shapes the scope

In NSW, backflow prevention devices may only be tested by plumbers who hold backflow accreditation endorsed on their NSW Fair Trading plumbing licence, and results must be reported to Sydney Water. Ask any tester for their licence and accreditation details and check the endorsement covers backflow work before the visit.
