Overhaul kits

Device repair and re-test

A failed field test does not usually mean a new assembly. Most failures trace to worn check seats, fouled discs, weakened springs or a relief valve holding debris, all serviceable with manufacturer overhaul kits. The device is stripped, rebuilt, re-pressurised and re-tested in the same visit wherever parts allow.

Scope

What this covers

  • Diagnosis of which stage failed and why, not just a fail result

  • Strip-down and rebuild using manufacturer-matched kit components

  • Replacement recommendation only where a body or seat is beyond overhaul

  • Immediate re-test after repair with the passing result lodged

  • Notes on recurring failure causes such as debris, water hammer or corrosion

Timing

When it's needed

Whenever an annual test returns a fail, a relief valve is discharging continuously, or a device is visibly leaking. A discharging RPZ is doing its job, venting rather than letting contamination pass, but it is also telling you the internals need attention now, not next anniversary.

Water discharging from an RPZ relief port means the device is protecting the supply: do not plug, cap or bypass it; arrange service instead. Never remove or dismantle a backflow assembly yourself, and treat any suspected contamination of drinking water as urgent: stop using the supply and contact Sydney Water.

What shapes the scope

In NSW, backflow prevention devices may only be tested by plumbers who hold backflow accreditation endorsed on their NSW Fair Trading plumbing licence, and results must be reported to Sydney Water. Ask any tester for their licence and accreditation details and check the endorsement covers backflow work before the visit.
